June 20 marks my third anniversary of studying Esperanto. To celebrate my anniversary, I thought I’d share some resources I have found valuable.
- Community
- Mastodon – I enjoy the Esperanto Mastodon community. I’m Ĝofredo Henning.
- Discord – Lots of conversation.
- Dictionaries
- English-Esperanto dictionaries – Babla, enshittified by ads. Vortaroj, in one page, making it hard to find common terms.
- Etymological – Etimologio.
- Vortaro – Plena Ilustrita Vortaro de Esperanto 2020, defining words in Esperanto.
- Wikipedia – Vikipedio, not a dictionary, but I use it to determine the translations of the names of birds, animals, place names, companies, and other noteworthy items.
- Wiktionary – Vikivortaro, with over 111,000 words.
- Word Lists
- Affixes – Including official and unofficial prefixes and suffixes.
- Roots – The Common Roots Glossary has the core 670 words of the language; mastery of these provides a high level of comprehension.
- Flash Cards – After giving up on Duolingo, I decided I needed to return to some vocabulary drills, so in March I started two lessons in Memrise (Duolingo Esperanto and Vortoj el La Hobito).
- Grammar
- Romániço – Practical grammar description with great sample sentences.
- Wikipedia – Concise grammatical summary.
- Facila Esperanto, a subset of the language using just 1,000 words:
- Articles – Website with easy articles for beginners.
- Spellcheck – Actually a utility to highlight words outside the subset.
- Wordlist – The 1,000 words.
